American Bach Soloists announce New Composition Competition
Open to currently enrolled composition students at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, this competition seeks compelling new works that feature and optimally utilize Baroque period instruments.
Orchestration: An ensemble of Baroque period string instruments including no more than four violins, two violas, two ‘cellos, one violone, and one harpsichord. Smaller ensembles are encouraged in any combination (e.g. duos, trios, accompanied sonatas, etc.).
Duration: between 7 and 15 minutes
Format: typeset PDF plus .mp3 audio of midi-realization
Timeline:
• Submissions deadline: April 25 2023 • Notification of winning composition: May 15 2023 • Performance parts for the winning composition are required by June 30 2023.
Applicants must be currently enrolled composition majors at SFCM.
A successful candidate will submit a composition that utilizes period instruments in ways that bring their colors, capabilities, and expressive potential to the forefront but does not ignore their technical idiosyncrasies and practical limitations. Applicants are expected to seek guidance about period instruments from SFCM Baroque Ensemble teachers, directors, and student participants.
The identity of the composer will be hidden from the evaluators: Jeffrey Thomas, Corey Jamason, and Elizabeth Blumenstock.
The chosen work will be performed on the opening concert of the 2023 American Bach Festival on Thursday July 27 2023 in Herbst Theatre, San Francisco.
