In Memoriam: Paul Avril

PAUL AVRIL lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and was a member of American Bach Soloists and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and was a founding member of the San Francisco Classical Woodwind Quintet. He also performed with Portland Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire in Cleveland, the Carmel Bach Festival, and Mercury Orchestra of Houston. Mr. Avril performed on both the Baroque and Classical horns, as well as early valve horn. He studied horn at Boston University and later at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. while playing in the Marine Band. As principal horn with ABS, Paul was heard nearly every summer over the last decade at the ABS Festival & Academy in his annual performances of the virtuoso aria "Quoniam tu solus sanctus" in Bach's Mass in B Minor. His wonderfully calm demeanor brought confidence and inspiration to his students. He was a great mentor, a great musician, and a great colleague to all who were fortunate to work with him over the years. His unexpected passing in October 2018 was a shock to all, but we were so lucky to have known him. Rest in peace, Paul.
