As composers and performers began to drift away from the Renaissance, where music was heavily influenced by vocal models, they explored a new style of creativity incorporating colorful new idioms that fused beautifully melodic vocal lines with exuberant dance rhythms and virtuosic technique. With works by such celebrated composers as Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann, and Corelli, this program epitomizes all those things that make Baroque Music so popular. Early Classical Chamber Music [TICKETS]
Wednesday July 14 2010 • 8:00 p.m. • Concert Hall

By the end of the 18th century, the Baroque period was coming to a close, and musicians were developing an entirely new approach to their art that seemed less complicated than the thick polyphonic style of the earlier part of the century. This new style had very clearly defined melodies resting on a more clear-cut harmonic accompaniment. A special treat on this program is a period transcription of Haydn’s ”Surprise” Symphony for a small chamber ensemble.

Johann Christian Bach · Quintet in G Major, Op. 11 No 2.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart · Flute Quartet in D Major, K. 285
Luigi Boccherini · Oboe Quintet in G Major
Franz Joseph Haydn · Symphony No. 94 in G Major, “Surprise” (arr. Solomon)

George Frideric Handel: La Resurrezione [TICKETS]
Saturday July 17 2010 • 8:00 p.m. • Concert Hall

As a young composer in his early twenties, George Frideric Handel traveled to Rome and Venice to learn from the Italian masters of his day. Within only a few months he surpassed their abilities. In Rome, he composed and produced La Resurrezione, a truly operatic oratorio, that scandalized the Vatican yet assured his place as the new master of Italian operatic style. Heaven and Hell – embodied in Lucifer and an Angel – battle for supremacy on earth through this dramatic telling of the emotions and convictions of Mary Magdalene and St. John. The score demands bravura performances from singers and instrumentalists alike. Academy singers and instrumentalists will be led by ABS Maestro Jeffrey Thomas.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Mass in B Minor [TICKETS]
Sunday July 18 2010 • 8:00 p.m. • Concert Hall

The 2010 SummerFest / Academy comes to its close with the composition that many call the greatest musical work of all time. Academy members – faculty and students – will perform along with other ABS musicians and the Academy Chorus in this first of many annual summer performances of Bach’s ultimate testament to his art.
